The Position

The Office of the Chaplain at Wake Forest University seeks an Assistant Chaplain for Jewish Life. Through advocacy, development, spiritual support, and coordination of cultural, educational, and social programs and activities, the Assistant Chaplain for Jewish Life at Wake Forest will be tasked with creating an environment that prompts rich cross-cultural experiences for the entire campus community. The Assistant Chaplain for Jewish Life encourages Jews and non-Jews to identify common values and negotiate differences in public life. Reporting to the University Chaplain, the Assistant Chaplain for Jewish Life provides leadership and oversight of support services; and designs and delivers programming that responds to the cultural and social needs of Jewish students, faculty, and sta.

The successful candidate will:

  • Engage and provide support to Jewish students, faculty, staff, and organizations while supporting broader Office of the Chaplain initiatives, including interfaith programming and serving on the on-call rotation.
  • Have experience organizing and coordinating religious, spiritual and social activities for Jewish students, including High Holy Days/Shabbat Dinners, study groups, and interfaith dialogue.
  • Be comfortable with engaging with diverse stakeholders including with faculty, staff, area synagogues and national thought leaders in Jewish life.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working with Jewish students in organizing and implementing programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Jewish sciences and active involvement in a Jewish community.
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of the needs and concerns of Jewish students, faculty, and sta.
  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse Jewish population at Wake Forest.
  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse American Jewish community.
  • Proficiency with Jewish sacred texts.
  • Creativity in imagining new initiatives and/or new ways of pursuing existing goals.

Preferred Education

  • Master’s Degree preferred – preferably in a closely-related field or the liberal arts.
  • Basic unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred or willingness to complete.
